Mt. Baekdu is considered to be one of the most crucially symbolic geographical locations for the peoples of Korea, China and Japan. The Japanese empire used Kyoto Universitys expedition to this mountain to confirm their own colonial and territorial empire, and to expand their knowledge and horizons. The Kyoto University expedition explored Mt. Baekdu scientifically and with great interest, and the Asahinewspaper reported upon this trip in detail. This article discusses what the expedition achieved and how Japanese society made use of its findings. The paper concludes that the risks associated with the scientific expedition motivated a renewed interest in further exploration.
