Although the word “authority” is not to be found in the Bible, there are many examples of characters of which, using modern language, we could say that they had considerable standing among their contemporaries. But according to the Sacred Scriptures, such an authority was often violently defied. Among numerous characters from the Old Testament, Moses plays a special role. Apart from Abraham, the father of the chosen nation, Moses is a key figure in the Salvation history. By accomplishing God’s mission to lead the descendants of Jacob out of Egypt and to take them to the Promised Land, Moses became the first true maker of the Israeli people and the first true believer in God JHWH. Because of this he gained a special authority among his followers and also among some pagans.
