In 1954, the communist authorities closed the theological departments at the universities of Warsaw and Cracow and established, in their place, the Academy of Catholic Theology. Contrary to the sinister expectations of the enemies of the Church, that motivated the establishment of the Academy of Catholic Theology, its theological department was, throughout the forty five years of the existence of the Academy, a leading and a soundly Catholic centre of theological thought in Poland.
