The conflict in Cyprus is rooted in the existence of two communities with different languages and religions: the majority Greek Cypriot people, which speaks Greek and professes Christian Orthodox, and the Turkish Cypriot minority, which speaks Turkish and with Islamic faith. So, it is a social and religious conflict. The difficult coexistence of both communities has been hampered, on the one hand, by the idea of Enosis, the union with Greece, supported by the Greco-Cypriot people; and on the other hand, by the idea of Taksim, that defends the division of the Island, idea that they have the Turkish Cypriot people. So, the conflict that still divides the island of Cyprus is the consequence of the lack of understanding of the two communities present on the island. The attempt to achieve peaceful coexistence between them, after the island’s independence in 1960, was short-lived, as violence and confrontation came back and ended the definitive separation after the Turkish invasion of the North of the island in 1974. Cyprus’s recent membership into the European Union did not bring peace either, and the conflict has continued nowadays. This research has been done inside the Proyecto I+D+I DER2015-65840-R ‘Diversidad y Convivencia: los derechos humanos como guía de acción’, del Programa Estatal de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación orientada a los retos de la sociedad, del Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad.
