This text inquires into the prevalent situation produced by transformations in the sociopolitical system in Poland. Professor Andrzej Tomaszewski, the newly nominated General Conservator of Historical Monuments, places particular emphasis on the need to include three new and essential processes into the present-day policy for the protection of monuments: democracy (including local democracy), market economy (including private ownerships) and European integration (including bi- or multi-cultural domains).
