The article has a theoretical character. Basing on Lakatos’ conception of knowledge development the authors propose linguistic adaptation of the theory of nonlinear determinism (so called ‘chaos theory’). In the process of the adaptation the ‘hard core’ of linguistic ‘research programme’ should be reorganised. The hard core consists of some deep and often unconsciously made assumptions, and the most important of them is Newtonian model of interpretation of the world based on differential calculus. Theory of nonlinear dynamics criticises mechanicism and instead of differential equation offers a system of differential equations increasing that way the explicative power of the model. The linguistic adaptation might be seen as a modifi cation of theoretical and methodological assumptions of former linguistics and as such it offers possibility to overcome limits of linguistic structuralism and to create research programme with more explicative power.
