The enormous devastations to which Polish historical complexes were subjected in the past should incline Poland to attach particular importance to their protection, even including extraordinary and unique steps. This problem entails the postulate for the absolute protection of extant monuments and the restoration of complexes wherever possible. The first of these tasks is implemented by the establishment of state museums in all palaces which had retained their artistic outfitting, and which should be excluded from eventual privatisation. Sacral objects, on the other hand, are listed in the register of monuments together with their historically shaped interiors, including liturgical equipment. The recreation of historical monuments is connected predominantly with wartime losses. Immediately after the war, civil law concerning components was employed for the restoration of elements of outfitting to old buildings. Such regulations made it possible, for example, to justify claims for the return of church bells plundered by Germany. At present, we are witnessing attempts at using these laws for the reinstatement of altars once belonging to the church of the Holy Virgin Mary in Gdańsk. In particularly justified instances, Polish praxis permits the reconstruction of a building which is ascribed outstanding historical significance and whose former outfitting has survived to a sufficient extent. Such a decision was made and realised in the case of the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
