Two earthquakes which took place on April 15 and 24, 1979, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea affected the region of Czarnogóra very seriously. The catastrophe entailed hundreds of victims and brought about a heavy destruction of towns and settlements with a rich and old history. The author gives a very brief outline of the history of the region, dating back to first centuries of this era. A rich cultural structure found its expression in the spatial system of buildings, the architecture of which reflected the influence of different forms of construction, including Venetian and Turkish ones. The richness of architectural forms accompanied by an extremely fine and picturesque landscape made the region of Czarnogóra both a wellknown and much appreciated area. The news on the vastness of the destruction met with a strong response on part of foreign centres (including Polish specialists) which offered their assistance and cooperation in the assessment of losses and in rescuing the historical heritage of Czarnogóra. One should add at this point that the problem of monuments protection is only part of a very broad complex of problems concerning the restoration of normal life in the region. The author discusses in detail different aspects of the rescue works to be undertaken. Thus, it is necessary to thoroughly examine the impaired houses, evaluate their historical value and find proper methods of the protection and reconstruction. An essential question is also to introduce such constructions into old buildings which would guarantee their stability and resistance to seismic tremors. The basic task is to balance manpower, financial resources and the time necessary to carry out securing, constructional and conservatory operations. Finally, the author states that if unique values of architectural monuments of Czarnogóra are to be rescued, international aid is the necessity.
