W Polsce, po przełomie politycznym 1989 r., nastąpiła normalizacja stosunków w odniesieniu do poszczególnych kościołów i związków wyznaniowych. Na mocy art. 4 ustawy z 17 maja 1989 r. o stosunku Państwa do Kościoła katolickiego w RP ustawowe umocowanie otrzymała Komisja Wspólna przedstawicieli Rządu RP i Konferencji Episkopatu Polski, której zadaniem jest rozpatrywanie problemów związanych z rozwojem stosunków między Państwem i Kościołem oraz spraw interpretacji niniejszej ustawy i jej wykonywania. W okresie od 1989 do 2008 r., Komisja Wspólna spotykała się 32 razy, a wśród zagadnień, które pojawiały się najczęściej, należy wymienić sprawy dotyczące nauki religii w szkole i majątku kościelnego. Poza tym punktem stałym obrad były też sprawy bieżące. Zaznaczyć trzeba, że mimo nowej rzeczywistości, która nastąpiła po 1989 roku, atmosfera panująca wewnątrz Komisji Wspólnej ulegała zmianom w zależności od zmian na arenie politycznej. Niemniej jednak, dzięki wspomnianej ustawie o stosunku Państwa do Kościoła, Komisja Wspólna otrzymała ustawową legitymację swego istnienia i działania, a dzięki temu mogła być płaszczyzną dialogu między Rządem a Episkopatem, bez względu na to, kto sprawował w kraju władzę. Zasadnicza wartość spotkań przedstawicieli Rządu i Episkopatu w ramach Komisji Wspólnej przejawiała się w tym, że powoływano dwustronne zespoły robocze zajmujące się przygotowywaniem rozwiązań, które w swej finalnej wersji mogły odpowiadać oczekiwaniom układających się stron.

Poland, after the political transformation in 1989, saw the normalization of the relations with respect to individual churches and religious denominations. An indication of that state of affairs was the adoption of a clear legal basis for the Joint Commission of the representatives of the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Conference of the Polish Episcopate, in accordance with art. 4 of the act of 17 May, 1989, on the relationship between the State and the Catholic Church in the Republic of Poland. The main objective of the Joint Commission is to examine the problems related both to the development of Church-State relations and to the interpretation and execution of the afore-mentioned act. From 1989 to 2008 the Joint Commission gathered 32 times, and among the most frequently discussed issues one can enumerate those concerning Church estates and religious education at school. Also some current matters typically appeared on the agenda. One ought to emphasize that despite the new reality after 1989, the atmosphere within the Joint Commission differed depending on the changes in the political arena. Nevertheless, owing to the above-mentioned act on the relationship between Church and State, the Joint Commission gained the statutory basis of its existence and activity, and constituted a plane of dialogue between the Government and the Episcopate, irrespective of the ruling party. The main value of the meetings of the representatives of the Government and the Episcopate lay in appointing bilateral teams who worked on preparing solutions which could finally prove acceptable to both negotiating parties.
