The paper acquaints the reader with the institution of sworn translator in Poland and in Italy. In the first chapter the authoress presents the history of sworn translator profession in Poland from year 1920 to year 2010, pointing out the most important cultural elements, regulations and acts concerning sworn translators. It draws attention to the differences between the position of sworn translators in Poland and in Italy, with special consideration of professional qualifications, procurement procedures, organizations associating translators, and laws in force. The second part of the paper is dedicated to the present situation concerning candidates for sworn translators education on postgraduate studies in Poland and European Commission arrangements from June 2010 concerning education of qualified oral and written translators.
