A.rchaeological research at the stronghold in Jęcznik (former Johannisthal) was carried out from 7 to 30 July 2010. The stronghold is situated 6 km from Szczytno, upon the River Sasek. The motte stronghold is located on the southern and south-western side in a meander of the river. on the other (northern) side ofthe river there is a settlement related to the stronghold. An elongated rampart was identified at the distance of several hundred meters to the north-west of the stronghold. The rampart extends from the River Sasek to Lake Sawica. In the current season, examinations in the yard of the stronghold were continued. Furthermore, two trial trenches were opened in the settlement on the other side of the river and one trial trench was opened on the elongated rampart. The most interesting results were yielded by the examinations in the yard, where an outline of a building (a tower/a residential-defensive structure) was discovered. 437 fragments of pottery, 8 fragments of roofing tiles, 71 fragments of bones, 25 iron finds, 2 kg of slag and 1,5 kg of cob were gathered in the course of this year’s research. Based on this, it was possible to identify the chronology the site, which extends from the 14th to the end of the 15th c. 36 fragments of pottery related to the West Balt Barrow Culture were identified among pottery finds.
