The present study offers an analysis of asyndetic multiverbal constructions consisting of the verb meaning enter and a following lexical verb in a range of colloquial Arabic varieties. The enter verb in such constructions usually undergoes a certain degree a semantic bleaching, acquiring an auxiliary function, which can be described as emphasizing the engagement of the agens in the action expressed by the following verb. As such, this function remains closely connected to the lexical meaning of enter by a relatively transparent metaphorical link, making these constructions an in teresting domain for exploration of the interface between lexicon and grammar. The study provides a descriptive analysis of the constructions, placing them in the context of a wider range of multiverbal constructions in Arabic. Furthermore, it approaches these constructions from a typological perspective by means of the notions of serial verb constructions and constructional auxiliaries and opts for the latter as the more useful comparative concept to account for them.
