The purpose of this study is to discuss the political position, composition and competences of two independent judicial institutions operating in Denmark, namely the Danish Court Administration and Council for Judicial Appointments. Their establishment in 1998 (they began operating on 1 July 1999) was undoubtedly the implementation of the constitutional guarantees of independence of judges, and in practice it also became an important factor in the very high level of confi dence of Danish society in the justice system. Both Danish judicial councils are statutory bodies because the 1953 constitution does not require the establishment of such institutions.
