Artykuł przedstawia początki i rozwój opieki sanitarno-epidemiologicznej w Katowicach przed 1945 r. Na początku XX w. Śląsk znajdował się na terytorium Niemiec, dlatego pierwsze instytucje zajmujące się zdrowiem publicznym, w tym identyfikacją, zapobieganiem i leczeniem chorób zakaźnych, utworzono na podstawie niemieckich przepisów. Po pierwszej wojnie światowej przeprowadzono wśród ludności śląskiej plebiscyt, na podstawie którego Śląsk, w tym Katowice, został włączony do Polski. Zasadnicza Ustawa Sanitarna z 1919 r. była podstawą organizacji pierwszej państwowej instytucji sanitarnej, które w 1923 r. została przekształcona w Państwowy Zakład Higieny. W artykule przedstawiono w ogólnym zarysie działalność PZH w okresie międzywojennym, a także inne polskie i niemieckie instytucje służące zwalczaniu chorób zakaźnych przed 1945 r.

The article describes the beginnings and development of the disease control system in Katowice before 1945. At the turn of the last century Silesia was ruled by Germans and first public health institutes and state agendas were organized according to the German law. to carry out research on infectious diseases, their identification, prevention and treatment. After the First World War the town of Katowice was incorporated into the territory of Poland by plebiscite. The Polish Sanitary Act from 1919 became a basis of foundation of the first state agenda to control infectious diseases which was transformed into the Polish Institute of Hygiene in 1923. In the article its development in the interwar period is described. Some information on other Polish and German institutions to control infectious diseases before 1945 in Silesia is also delivered.
