The article presents preliminary findings from an ongoing ethnographic research among the population of Polish mortgagors who have signed contracts that denominate or index their debt in the Swiss franc. The author argues that long-term fx mortgage contracts, which connect banks and mortgagors (but in fact many more actors), become vehicles of moral reasoning and action that embeds the abstract financial instrument in people’s life-worlds or mobilizes them against unexpected and unwanted effects of the instrument’s performance.
