The speech of Mattathias – the one including his last words said before his death – is his testament, combining both a spiritual message and concrete hints concerning the work launched by Mattathias. This speech is a literary composition of the author of 1Mch, who – when editing it – very clearly referred to the Old Testament’s tradition of the Hebrew Bible (the vocabulary, the phraseology, the figures of outstanding ancestors, historical threads). Based on conducted analyses one can conclude, that Mattathias was created an exemplar of patriarchs or of great leaders of the nation. It can be seen from the content of the speech, that its key message was the call of Mattathias towards his sons, urging them to be faithful to the Law and to defend its orders from being breached. Examples of famous ‘men and fathers’ have been recalled, so that contemplation of their lives inspired the Maccabean brothers to act. As the author of 1Mch emphasised, the main prize awaiting for Maccabees for faithful fulfilment of the orders of the Law and guarding them was the achievement of great glory and of a name that was to be eternally remembered.
