The new language theory put forward by the German linguist Christoph Luxenberg stipulates the necessity to decipher the meaning of Qur’anic verses strictly though the prism of the Syriac (Syro-Aramaic) grammar, both its morphology and syntax. Drawing on a detailed philological insight into the Qur’anic text Luxenberg argues that the Qur’anic surahs (at least those chronologically earlier – the Meccan ones) had been originally written down in a mixed Arab-Syriac language (with Syriac characters), and only some time later were they transcribed into the Arabic language, which at that time was emerging in its written form. This revisionist thesis finds support when analyzing these Qur’anic verses, which are ambiguous in meaning (fairly numerous in the Qur’an) with the help of philological tools suggested by Luxenberg’s method. The paper presents some practical examples of applying this method, with general conclusions deriving from this very unconventional theory.
