In the paper we present the students of a qualification that belong to a less 'marketable' area of the differentiated, segmented higher education. Social pedagogy training can be considered as a relatively young area in Hungarian higher education, however, it has shortly become a popular field among the students. Looking at the history of the subject one can trace the process of its formation in a busy time of the expansion of educational institutions, divisions and the target groups. If the expansion of higher education equals to a decrease in the inequalities of chances to admission, it is exactly the less fashionable areas with more humble career opportunities that attract a high proportion of 'new' student masses, who are then more sensitive to the tension between the training numbers and the demands of the labour market, as they do not have the resources to move on, to compensate the degradation of their degree with other assets.
