W artykule podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytania: czym jest społeczeństwo informacyjne, dlaczego ważne jest wspieranie rozwoju społeczeństwa informacyjnego, jakie inicjatywy podejmuje się w Unii Europejskiej dla wspierania rozwoju społeczeństwa informacyjnego, jak planuje się przyspieszenie rozwoju społeczeństwa informacyjnego w Polsce, jak rozwija się statystyka społeczeństwa informacyjnego, jakie działania podejmuje GUS w dziedzinie społeczeństwa informacyjnego, jaka jest koncepcja badania wykorzystania technologii informacyjno-telekomunikacyjnych przez przedsiębiorstwa, a także gospodarstwa domowe i ich członków.

The article presents a general characterisation of information society, reasons tc promote development of information society, initiatives undertaken by the European Union (EU) and in Poland, and describes a development of a new sector of statistics dealing with survey on information society, especially regarding to the new directive oj the European Parliament and Council on information society statistics and already conducted community surveys on application of information and telecommunication technologies (ICT) in enterprises and households. The article also presents activities of the Central Statistical Office of Poland aiming at creation of information society statistics in Poland on the European level. The authors describe organisational and methodological conceptions of surveys on ICT application in enterprises and households elaborated on the basis of questionnaires harmonised for all countries of the EU. This survey will be the first time conduct in Poland this year. (original abstract)
