W opracowaniu porównano Polskę z innymi krajami Unii pod względem poziomu spożycia artykułów żywnościowych. Szukanie podobieństw miało na celu uzyskanie odpowiedzi: czy i w jakim kierunku polski wzorzec konsumcji może się zmienić w wyniku procesu jego unifikacji? Podstawowym materiałem statystycznym, wykorzystanym w badaniach, były bilanse żywnościowe opracowywane przez Organizację ds. Wyżywienia i Rolnictwa ONZ (FAO) za lata 1985-2000.

Nowadays a lot of stress is put on spatial research concerning huge areas such as continents, states, or regions. Many methods are employed for spatial researches which facilitate division of a large population into smaller groups, thus making characterisation easier, and also making definition of similarities and differences possible. Such methods are: the method of Wroclaw taxonomy and the Tchekanovski's method. These methods facilitated division of a population which was made up by the countries of the European Union and Poland into three groups of countries, and also separation of "atypical countries". Division was made by means of three diagnostic features, which pertained to consumption of chosen food products. The issue of food product consumption is very important, since the entry of Poland to the European Union is connected with emergence of a joint market. A joint market may, however, influence changes in the level and structure of food product supply and the model of consumption of Poles when Poland finds itself within the Union structure. Therefore, the article presents similarities and differences in food product consumption in the European Union countries and in Poland, and determination of those countries which Poland is most close to from the viewpoint of determined features.(original abstract)
