Analysing the toponyms in the novel Robinson Crusoe by D. Defoe and the novel by J. V. Pleva based on the Defoe’s original, we try to show the functions of the toponyms in these texts and the different approach of these authors to the illusion of reality evocated by using or non-using real toponyms. In Defoe’s Robinson there is no toponym on the island, however, the author uses many real toponyms for the other objects around and so persuades the reader of the reality of the story. On the other hand, in Pleva’s Robinson there is no name of the island or its neighbourhood but we can find a lot of toponyms on the island created by Robinson himself. There is an opposition between the nameless position of the island and the concrete restricted space on the island.
