The problem mentioned in the title, i.e. the dilemmas of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, is taken up starting from a reminder of several crucial facts from the writer's biography. It includes Solzhenitsyn being arrested in 1945, a reestablishment of Solzhenitsyn's good name in 1956, a literary debut when his short story. 'One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich' is published, aspersions thrown on Solzhenitsyn in 1967, Solzhenitsyn being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, publication of 'The Gulag Archipelago' in western countries, the writer being exiled from the Soviet Union and stay in the United States. Getting to know the western culture made him realise some important matters. A significant part of the reflection which arose as a result of that is disappointment in the western civilisation, its system of social and political relations, the democracy which is present there and its various forms. Criticism of this democracy is transferred onto Solzhenitsyn's attiude towards 'perestroika' which was taking place in USSR and the changes in Russia's life. The writer criticises the beginning democracy in Russia, denies numeros forms of market economy and idealises the Russian 'province' which appears to him as the revival of Russia. It was the two-month journey across provincial Russia that was favourable for him to assume an attitude, generally a negative one, towards a number of aspects of the changing reality, including countries regaining their freedom frm the Russian dominance. The above shows that the writer is somewhat naive and lacks permanent opinions. Solzhenitsyn was becoming more and more lonely.
