European scientometric models for the evaluation of medical and health science publications

The impact factor calculation model, established more than fifty years ago and generally used for the evaluation of scientific publications has always divided the scientific world. Many further theories and evaluation models have arisen since then, the majority of which have aimed to improve the Thomson Scientific model by taking into consideration the characteristics of a region, a research field or a language area, thus to create a more favorable index number also dealing with equal opportunity for the appropriate scientific communities. From the variety of alternative models, two are presented in detail in this paper: Index Copernicus and Euro Factor. Both models can be applied to medical and health science publications. Index Copernicus also evaluates Hungarian journals, while Euro Factor mostly applies to the professional journals of the EU15 countries, that is to older member states of the European Union. The creation of Euro Factor is justified by an important figure that shows that the number of publications published in the countries of EU25 exceeds the number of publications in the United States. By applying the strengths of these two similar models, a standard European evaluation model and impact factor could be created.
