The paper presents a critical analysis of different approaches to the con­cept of conventionality of natural language and to the conventions, which are claimed to govern it. The author describes and exemplifies the Conventions of Truthfulnesa and the conventions of Language Use. The discussion is completed by explicating the nature of the relationship between the conventionality and arbitrariness in natural language.
