The transformation in the social, economic, spatial and environmental dimension is also reflected in the situation of Polish cities. The presented article takes up an issue of multi- -dimensional transformation of urban space through revitalisation projects. The state of physical development of a city - in particular of its downtown areas - is often a significant barrier to its dynamic development. It is often necessary to practically reconstruct the whole neighbourhoods. This paper presents the process of revitalisation in the spatial, economic, social, environmental, communication, aesthetics and functional dimensions while outlining the objectives and effects of such changes in a city. The general assumptions of the programme of revitalisation of Łódź - PROREVITA - have also been presented, with most emphasis placed on housing issues. The example of Łódź has been used to present the effects with regards to improving the housing resources through revitalisation projects. The role of Social Construction Associations in the process of systematic reconstruction of urban space has also been outlined.
