The life and property insurance market in Poland has been developing dynamically since 1990. The legal foundations of insurance activities have been laid down in order to make the insurance companies act in a market-oriented way. The structure of the insurance market is gradually changing in terms of the share that particular companies have in it as well as in terms of the types of sold insurance policies. The development of the insurance market is by no means trouble free. The problems it faces come about as a result of a specific nature of events, threats of various dangers. The share of foreign capital in the capital structure of insurance companies dealing in both life insurance as well as property insurance is systematically growing. The authors describe a djuamic increase of a written premium, paid out compensations and the level of provision cover ratios in insurance companies. The analysed insurance market is serviced by agents (around 320 thousands), brokers (45 thousands) as well as 71 insurance companies. The authors present also technical accounts of insurance companies. Various aspects o f competition between insurance companies are also observed. The article includes an analysis of numerous statistical data which presents the trends and directions of change on the insurance market.

Celem artykułu jest wskazanie na podstawowe tendencje w zakresie struktury ilościowej i jakościowej rynku kapitałowego w Polsce w analizowanym okresie. Artykuł powstał w oparciu o opracowania nadzoru ubezpieczeń z lat 1995-2003, a także biuletyny Polskiej Izby Ubezpieczeń.
