The paper raises the issue of education as a value. In the theoretical part, education has been placed as part of socio-cultural capital. In addition, the theoretical model of the analysis of education as a value on macro-structural, local and micro-structural levels was constructed. On the first level, the trends of growth of education in Poland are shown, especially in Silesia. An excessive increase in the number of people with higher education is not always a positive value due to the lack of adequate jobs. Similar dilemmas, but with even greater force, occur at the local level. Active individuals are leaving small local societies, in order to learn. Finally, the growth of educational aspirations among young people can be observed on the micro-social level. The problem is to find employment adequate to education, where the individual could realize him/herself. In the conclusion, synthetic pros and cons of promoting higher education are indicated.
