The article discusses the issue of worshiping the miraculous painting of St. Francis Xavier from the Jesuit church in Grudziądz dedicated to him. Based on the sources and studies, issues related to the history and anthropology of the cult of the miraculous image have been raised, which is considered in the context of the functioning of the image in Grudziądz and Chełmno Land. The image was moved to Grudziądz from Jablonowo Pomorskie in 1708 and became an important object of worship for the community of the city and the region. Over the years, the church has developed its own and original forms of devotion, which made the Jesuit church a strategic and now popular sanctuary centre of the Chelmno Land. In this paper, the author touches upon the problem of artistic affiliations of the Grudziądz image, pointing to graphic patterns that had become an inspiration for creating the image. The analysis also involves iconographic issues, especially the innovative solutions that appear in the set of attributes of St. Francis Xavier, contained in the dress covering the miraculous image. They allow to correct a mistaken recognition of iconographic motifs functioning in the description of the image in the Catalogue of Art Monuments in Poland. This verification contributes to demonstrating the special value of the Grudziądz monument under study, considered here in the context of the implementation of the postulates of the Trent council’s reform concerning sacred art. The Foundation of the Jesuits from Grudziądz has been presented as a comprehensive work, employing a whole set of means of artistic expression, derived from the body of Baroque forms of theatrum sacrum. The study also mentions the monument of artistic craftsmanship, which is a Baroque monstrance coming from the Jesuit church, a very important complement to the Xavierine piety propagated in the church and college in Grudziądz. The analysis of the forms of folk religiousness in the cult of St. Francis Xavier presented in the article finally reveals the specificity of traditional culture in the Chełmno region, where the cult of Grudziądz painting functioned for decades.
