The revitalization of public spaces and buildings has evolved to be a process in which the community and the residents of an area are actively involved in the process of changing and developing spaces and buildings of interest. In this way revitalization of public spaces comes very close to the empowerment goals of action research. The following paper pursues the similarities and contrasts between action research and revitalization of public spaces. Several practices in revitalization projects are presented and analyzed. Then, the main theoretical and methodological aspects of action research are described and critically assessed with respect to its assumptions and risks. The third section proposes an analytical framework for comparing action research and revitalization projects and summarizes the main features of action research that may be considered for future revitalization projects.

Rewitalizacja ewoluuje w kierunku działań, w których społeczność i mieszkańcy są aktywnie zaangażowani w proces zmiany i rozwoju przestrzeni i budynków w swojej okolicy. W ten sposób rewitalizacja przestrzeni publicznej staje się bardzo zbliżona do realizacji celów w przypadku badań w działaniu. W artykule zaprezentowano podobieństwa i różnice pomiędzy badaniami w działaniu a procesem rewitalizacji przestrzeni publicznej. Zaprezentowano i poddano analizie kilka przykładów dotyczących rewitalizacji. Następnie przedstawiono główne założenia teoretyczne i metodologiczne dotyczące badań w działaniu, opisano je i poddano krytycznej ocenie biorąc pod uwagę towarzyszące temu podejściu założenia i ryzyka. W trzeciej części artykułu zaproponowano ramy analityczne przydatne do porównywania projektów badawczych i rewitalizacji i wskazano na główne cechy badań w działaniu, które można wykorzystać w przyszłych projektach rewitalizacyjnych
