In recent years, a gradual return towards nature and culture has appeared, more specifically towards the cultural heritage. The idea of sustainable development, which was defined in the 1980's, is one of its expressions. It was also reflected in the area of cultural tourism. The article presents considerations on the relationship between rural cultural tourism and sustainable development. Its purpose is to analyse the cohesion between the plans of rural tourism and sustainable development of cultural tourism in rural areas, as well as the role of tourism in accordance with sustainable development paradigm in the development of cultural awareness of the rural areas residents and tourists. The predominant method is the analysis the literature on the subject matter, which is an attempt to indicate further research areas.
