According to the Social Doctrine of the Church the employees have a right to associate in trade unions in order to defend their interests. The activity of the trade unions increases the social solidarity awareness which manifests itself in the communal interactions, the relationship between the capital and the labour as well as the state engagement in the welfare policies. This solidarity is put into practice among the members of the trade unions. First of all, they promote the subjective concept of labour. They also organise strikes. Finally they educate people about the dignity of work. This article makes references to selected documents of the Social Doctrine of the Church, starting with the magisterium of Pope Leo XIII.

W nauczaniu społecznym Kościoła jest przywołane prawo do związków zawodowych, których misję stanowi obrona praw ludzi pracy. Zaangażowanie organizacji związkowych prowadzi do podnoszenia świadomości solidarności w ramach współzależności wspólnotowych, odniesienia pracy do kapitału oraz stosunku państwa do szeroko rozumianej sfery socjalnej. Postulowana solidarność przybiera w działalności związkowej konkretne kształty. Pierwszym działaniem jest promowanie podmiotowego aspektu pracy. Drugą forma aktywności jest organizowanie strajków. Trzecim i ostatnim działaniem jest inicjowanie procesu wychowawczego, podkreślającego godziwość pracy. W artykule wykorzystano elementy nauczania społecznego Kościoła, począwszy od dokumentów Leona XIII.
