Zasadniczym celem artykułu jest zbadanie reakcji władzy komunistycznej w Polsce na zaangażowanie Republiki Federalnej Niemiec w ekonomiczny i polityczny rozwoju procesu integracji europejskiej w latach 1949–1989. W artykule przeanalizowano ewolucję stanowiska władzy ludowej w Polsce w odniesieniu do rosnącego znaczenia Niemiec Zachodnich w strukturach jednoczącej się Europy. Wraz z pogłębianiem procesu integracji europejskiej i jednocześnie słabnącą pozycją bloku socjalistycznego i Polski – w coraz większym stopniu uzależnionej od pomocy gospodarczej „zachodu”, w tym RFN – władze PRL stopniowo „ocieplały” wizerunek Niemiec Zachodnich we Wspólnotach Europejskich i rezygnowały z, wydawałoby się, niezmiennych pryncypiów, jakimi były zagrożenie niemieckie związana z tym obrona jałtańsko-poczdamskiego status quo.

The major aim of this paper is to explore the response of Poland’s communist regime to the involvement of the German Federal Republic in promoting economic and political integration processes in Europe in 1949–1989. The paper analyses the evolution of the stance the people’s power took confronting the growing relevance of Western Germany in uniting Europe. As the European integration processes consolidated and, at the same time, the position of the socialist block, therein Poland, crumbled and grew ever more dependent on Western, including Federal German, aid, the successive governments of the People’s Republic of Poland gradually “softened” the image of Western Germany in European Communities and gave up on the purportedly immovable dogmas, such as the German threat and the related defence of the status quo as determined by the Yalta and Potsdam conferences.
