Beginning the education path of Vilnius townspeople from 17th century to the first half of 18th century: home schooling

Based on the surviving last wills and posthumous asset inventories of Vilnius City Council and suolininkai court (the equivalent of the present-day jury) as well as matriculae of schools of higher education, this article discusses the early education of Vilnius townspeople from the 17th century to the first half of the 18th century, i.e., tutor-assisted home schooling. The offspring of Vilnius residents were usually educated by students of Vilnius Academy. Four of them managed to gain the bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and philosophy, and three of them earned the master’s degree. The others studied in the Academy, but were not granted a degree. They were also active members of the student Congregation of Marian Fathers, holding various positions there and contributing to it financially. The information on the home schooling process is sparse. Children were educated at home mostly up to the age of seven before they started school. Parents were very careful in selecting a tutor, and raised demanding requirements: tutors had to be well-educated, eloquent and adhere to moral principles, also to be able to shape the children’s character, and imbue them with customs and traditions.
