The aim of this paper is to discuss the problem of how corpus linguistics can be used in the field of English for medical purposes (EMP), in particular in: teaching medical English, teaching medical translation, assisting translators in rendering medical texts and authors in writing medical academic texts. A number of corpus tools and ways of data analysis are presented, such as: automatic term extraction, data visualisation, collocation and tag analysis, using regular expressions in data retrieval, function of lexical bundles and word lists. On a more general note, some suggestions as regards the didactics of EMP are presented, such as increasing the number of teaching hours devoted specifically to advanced EMP, along with the so-called general EMP, and designing classes devoted to the analysis of academic discourse and the teaching of academic writing.
