Niniejszy artykuł stanowi próbę refleksji antropologicznej nad fenomenem jednego z tradycyjnych obrzędów religijnych Wielkiego Tygodnia w kalabryjskim miasteczku Tropea w południowych Włoszech – la processione di Cristo Morto. Autorka, analizując poszczególne elementy wielkopiątkowej procesji w kontekście teatralnym, religijnym oraz kulturowym, zastanawia się nad pochodzeniem tego zwyczaju, jego związkami z tożsamością mieszkańców miasteczka oraz znaczeniem religijno-symbolicznym praktykowanego rytuału. Czerpiący obficie z folkloru oraz pradawnych zwyczajów pogańskich obrzęd stanowi nie tylko manifestację wiary w zmartwychwstanie Chrystusa, ale też odpowiedź na potrzeby społeczne ludności Tropei identyfikującej się silnie z miejscem zamieszkania oraz odczuwającej potrzebę wspólnotowego przeżywania ważnych w życiu lokalnej społeczności świąt i wydarzeń.

The article is an attempt of anthropological reflection on the phenomenon of one of the traditional religious rites of Holy Week in the Calabrian town of Tropea in southern Italy, which is la processione di Cristo Morto. The author, analyzing individual components of the Good Friday procession in theatrical, religious and cultural context, reflects on the origin of this custom, its connections with the identity of the town’s inhabitants and the religious and symbolic meaning of this ritual. Drawing abundantly from folklore and ancient pagan customs is not only a manifestation of faith in the resurrection of Christ, but also a response to the social needs of the people of Tropea strongly identifying themselves with their place of residence and feeling the need for communal experience of important holidays and events in the local community.
