El debate sobre el Estado y el mercado y su relacionamiento mutuo fue siempre vinculado, tanto en Europa, como en América Latina, a la discusión sobre las estrategias de desarrollo. El autor hace un balance crítico de este debate desde el comienzo del siglo veinte hasta nuestros días. En la segunda parte se discute las expe-riencias del Estado Benefactor, la variante europea del capitalismo moderno, sus éxi-tos y crisis, y sus lecturas para América Latina para, finalmente, preguntarse por el lu-gar de la cohesión social en las relaciones europeo-latinoamericanas.

The debate over the state and the market and their mutual relation-ship has always been linked, both in Europe and Latin America, with the discussion on development strategies. The author makes a critical assessment of this debate from the early twentieth century till today. The second part discusses the experiences of the welfare state, the European variant of modern capitalism, its successes and crises and their readings for Latin America to finally question the place of social cohesion in the European-Latin American relations.
