The article aims at presenting rumors, understood as dynamic communicative events, in terms of a mechanism used by media to create credible information, and consequently to influence the definition of a particular situation by the audience. The above-mentioned phenomenon is clearly visible in the Polish quality press providing socio-political news and commentaries. At the same time, it exemplifies the role of the media in contemporary society facing the increasing complexity of the world. The authoress includes the results of content analysis of articles referring to the so-called 'Rywin scandal' published in 'Gazeta Wyborcza', 'Trybuna', 'Rzeczpospolita', 'Polityka', 'Wprost', and 'Nie' in the period between exposing the corruption affair by 'Gazeta Wyborcza' and establishing the special investigation commission founded to clear the case.
