Currently, more and more households have to decide between heating and eating, which represent the largest expenditure items in EU countries. The aim of this contribution is to present an alternative approach to monitoring the different levels of energy poverty (EP) in Slovakia at different geographical scales. The paper answers three research questions: where, in which regions and municipalities, are the highest level of EP, what are the main factors and differences conditioning their unfavourable situation and who the main bearer of EP is. The results showed that Slovakia had the highest expenditure on energy of all EU countries. Three regions are vulnerable at the NUTS 3 regional level. Analyses at the regional level of LAU 1 and LAU 2 revealed significant differences between districts and municipalities. On this basis, the districts and municipalities with the highest level of EP as well as its main bearers were identified.
