The main purpose of the paper is to summarize the essence of the administrative changes in Berehove in the second half of the 19th century, and point out the socio-political tensions that, through the urban events, shed light on the field-town conditions prevailing in the country. The status of „Orderly Council“ was the result of considerable efforts, after which signs of urbanisation in the city became stronger. Of particular importance was the impact of the fire of 1880, which shook the status of the county seat, but the town administration was able to benefit from this unfortunate event. Religious-ethnic data showed that the language use in the town was homogeneous, as the Jews also used Hungarian freely. The results of our investigations show that the economy of the town was primarily based on viticulture, but as we approach the 20th century, the milling industry and brickworks brought significant income to the settlement. The school system, including the establishment of a grammar school, was fundamental to the strengthening of the bourgeoisie and the status of the town. The associations described in the study and their activities clearly represented the civilisation of the townspeople.
