Schengen jako wyzwanie dla teorii integracji europejskiej

The aim of the article is to present the possibility of conceptualising of a significant, unclear, and difficult to explain European integration phenomenon called Schengen. Presenting the ambiguous definition of Schengen and the effects of literature review, the article shows the deficit of in-depth analyses of this sphere of European integration. To overcome this problem, theories of European integration are helpful. Based on these theories, the article presents three major levels of theorising on which Schengen can be conceptualised. At each of these levels, this issue will be analysed in a different way as: a special example of European integration, a model of European territoriality and a project of border governance in Europe. Each of these approaches has its separate theoretical framework and assumptions, uses a different conceptual apparatus and formulates different research questions. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie możliwości konceptualizacji ważnego i nieoczywistego, a przez to trudnego do wyjaśnienia europejskiego fenomenu integracji schengeńskiej. Obrazując wieloznaczność definicyjną tego określenia oraz odwołując się do wyników przeglądu literatury przedmiotu, wskazano na istnienie deficytów pogłębionych analiz eksplanacyjnych tego pola europejskiej integracji. Propozycją, która może służyć przezwyciężeniu tej sytuacji jest odwołanie się do teorii integracji europejskiej. Na podstawie tych teorii zostaną przedstawione trzy zasadnicze poziomy teoretyzowania, na których można konceptualizować procesy integracyjne zachodzące w strefie Schengen. Na każdym z tych poziomów zagadnienie to będzie analizowane w odmienny sposób, jako: 1) swoisty proces integracji; 2) model terytorialności; 3) projekt zarządzania granicami. Każde z tych ujęć posiada odrębne ramy i założenia teoretyczne, wykorzystuje inny aparat pojęciowy i formułuje odmienne pytania badawcze.
