This article takes Japanese culture as its context for the education of very young children in Japan. People in different cultures have different constructions of the self, of others, and of the independence of individuals in society. These constructions can influence, and in many cases determine, the very nature of individual experience, including cognition, emotion, and motivation. Many Asian cultures have distinct conceptions of individuality that insist on the fundamental relatedness of individuals to each other. The emphasis is on attending to others, fitting in, and existing in harmonious interdependence with them. The article tries to show how education supports these ideas in Japanese society. The author has attempted to avoid jargon and discussion of statistics so that the text can also be read by any persons who are simply interested in Japanese society or who seek new insights into early childhood education. This being the case, the author decided to present basic information relating to both the cultural and historical background, as well as contemporary research and thinking relating to Japanese child development, education, and family life. The article is divided into 3 major parts: the first part offers information about relations between the educational system and cultural system in society, the second part is about the cultural background of Japanese society and the third, about education in Japanese kindergartens, their roles in Japanese society and culture, as well as how children are brought up by families and educational institutions.
