Impairment of linguistic functions, regardless of their aetiology, affects a large group of children starting or completing the first stages of school education. However, the lack of agreement with respect to the terminology in the domains of science, medicine and publications of educational organs as well the lack of specific standards for diagnostic procedures hinder the organization of a well-operating and adequate system of support for children suffering from such difficulties. Language skills condition effective communication, interactions and good interpersonal relationships; moreover, they are also the foundation of educational and professional success, which translates directly to the well-being of an individual. For these reasons, they should be an object of particular care of education policies and early psychological-pedagogical intervention.
