This text provides a critical analysis of Stephen Jay Gould’s description of the canonical icons of evolution theory (like evolutionary tree or ladder). The author of this article explains the stability of canonical icons in culture and common knowledge by their symbolic and mythological origins. Next, a hypothesis is formulated that the mythological and symbolic worlds are the driving forces of scientific imagination.
