The paper compares different ways of showing the issue of 'blood communion' in selected examples of three genres of the 19th century Bulgarian literature: belles-lettres (novel of manners L. Karavelov 'Bulgarians of the old days' (Bulgari ot staro vreme), memoirs (Z.Stojanov 'Notes from the Bulgarian uprisings' (Zapiski po bulgarskite v'staniya) and folk songs (about sinful hayduk). This is an attempt to interpret the symbolism of 'blood communion' present in these works. The authoress underlines the mix of both Christian and primitive, magical elements of the symbolism.
