A study on the expressive stability of the lexeme szalony In our everyday communication, we often use words which have several meanings carrying a different expressive and emotional load. The type of the message they convey depends on numerous factors. The paper presents a study on the expressive stability of the lexeme szalony (mad), carried out on the basis of examples of use taken from literature and press comprising the National Polish Language Corpus, and from Słowosieć web dictionary. Four groups of dictionary definitions for the lexeme were distinguished. The first group refers to the physical aspect of certain phenomena, the second group entails meanings referring to illness and any symptoms of madness. The remaining meanings define very strong emotions. The last group classifies meanings which describe uniqueness and originality. The next stage of the study entailed the assessment of expressive stability of the lexeme szalony, which consists in distinguishing the main components of meaning, defining the value judgement in line with the classification developed by Jadwiga Puzynina, defining the emotional load by applying the five-point Likert scale, assigning emotions with the use of Robert Plutchik’s theory of emotion, and determining the word’s stylistic function. The final part involved the identification of synonyms and antonyms for lexeme szalony in a given meaning. The analysis was further supplemented by information on the lexeme’s presence in Polish and Serbian phraseology. To conclude, the study showed that the lexeme szalony carries a substantial expressive load and assumes important stylistic functions, due to cultural and social, as well as psychological factors.
