Celem niniejszego badania jest: a) zrozumienie konsekwencji starzenia się dla starszych kobiet w kontekście wiejskim, b) analiza wpływu usług publicznych na sytuację osób starszych oraz c) zaproponowanie działań na rzecz poprawy jakości życia starszych kobiet. W badaniu przeprowadzono analizę jakościową, obejmującą 20 częściowo ustrukturyzowanych wywiadów z kobietami w wieku powyżej 60 lat zamieszkującymi obszary wiejskie Teneryfy (Hiszpania). Wywiady koncentrowały się na trzech głównych obszarach tematycznych: 1) doświadczeniu bycia kobietą i osobą starszą, 2) pełnionych przez starsze kobiety rolach społecznych oraz 3) realizowanych przez nie projektach osobistych. Z odpowiedzi narratorek wyłoniła się podkategoria związana ze znaczeniem opieki, której wyniki zaprezentowano w niniejszym artykule. Analiza ujawniła, że starsze kobiety przez całe życie, również w wieku podeszłym, pełnią rolę opiekunek wobec swoich potomków oraz przodków. Jednak społeczne wzorce oczekiwań dotyczące opieki nad obecnie starszymi kobietami są niesymetryczne względem rodzaju opieki, jaką one same świadczyły innym. Kwestie dotyczące przyszłości ich opieki, konieczności planowania oraz uwzględniania ich opinii budzą wiele wątpliwości. Autorzy podkreślają potrzebę rewizji zasad, na których opierają się działania na rzecz osób starszych, oraz wskazują na konieczność uwzględnienia demokratycznych zasad i społecznej wrażliwości, odpowiadających na potrzeby starszych kobiet.
