The first, theoretical part of the article shows the discussion on the notion of tourism and its role in education and upbringing — the most important functions of tourism as they shape positive attitudes among pupils like: patriotism, tolerance, striving for achieving aims, and activating them. The foundation of educational activity consists of school trips, the classification of which is presented on the basis of the available literature. In the context of such a debate, the authoress first of all concentrates on the notion of educational tourism, hitherto neglected or narrowly defined in various publications and also mistakenly — according to the authoress — characterized as an element of the so-called cultural tourism. Thus, basing on the terms of tourism (acc. to WTO), education and training (pedagogical notions) existing nowadays in literature, the authoress proposes in her summing up the introduction of a more widespread use of the author’s new and fuller definition of educational tourism as a set of activities of people travelling throughout, within and outside their vicinities (regions) in order to achieve cognitive, educational, training, cultural and sightseeing goals. The second part of the paper presents the results of a survey carried out among Polish tourism industry subjects regarding knowledge and interests about the Piast Route. The inquired subjects — tour operators, tourism agents, hotel managers — are organized in regional tourism chambers and the Polish Chamber of Tourism. Questionnaires comprised of two parts: general — aimed at all the subjects mentioned before, and a more detailed one — heading for the travel agencies (tour operators first of all). The conducted investigation was firstly intended for showing the knowledge of objects connected with the Piast Route, secondly — for the interest of tourism organizers and their clients in using particular places for educational tourism. The results of the survey offer a clear picture of the present situation, needs and directions of the development of the educational tourism on the Piast Route. One should remember that in order to reach the last chain (a client) with a proposal of sales and promotions of tourism products — the Piast Route in this case — the constant contact of tourism organizers with regional tourism chambers or their participation in tourism fairs all over Poland is necessary. After all, it is namely the tour operators who create the programmes of excursions and distribute them among agents and clients. To raise the interests of organizers in the values of the Piast Route, constant adjustment of the development to current requirements is needed as well as that nothing but defined and non-incidental objects, chosen with the help of the so-called historic censorship, should be considered. The Programme Board for the Piast Route has already began working on the latter consideration.
