Władysław Nehring, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wrocław from 1893 to 1894, was a well-known eminent scholar: a Slavist, an ethnologist, and a historian. But what has not been dealt with in literature on the subject are issues connected with the many academic posts that he held, which I have given the main focus in this paper. Nehring was the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy three times (from 1875 to 1876, from 1888 to 1889 and again after the premature death of his successor), and a deputy dean from 1889 to 1890. After his time as Vice-Chancellor, he was an academic senator from 1890 to 1891, from 1894 to 1895, and from 1895 to 1896, which is ample evidence of his significant role in the academic community. Nehring was also the outstanding figure of his scholarly circle. Between 1876 and 1904 he supervised seventeen doctoral students, and his classes enjoyed great popularity among students. His Slavonic seminar, which officially started in 1891, occupied another central place in his scholarly achievements. To his audience, and especially to his students, he remained, as I. Chrzanowski put it, an unrivalled master.
