Before conservation the map of Słupsk was a completely ruined object. Thin paper without glue, microorganisms-attacked fibre, mechanical damage such as tearing, incomplete paper felt, pressed and glue-cemented folds of the surface. large size and thick heavily bonded doubling — these were the difficulties that conservators had to face. The first stage covered the cleansing of tissue-paper surface, the washing out of products of decomposition and dirt from the fibres as well as removal of damp patches. Gluing of the facing to Japanese tissue-paper with Cellit L-900 made it possible to preserve the entire plane of the map and to remove the old cloth doubling. After making up the missing parts of paper felt a new strengthening layer was put up in form of paper and cloth doubling. The final step in the conservation work on the map of Słupsk was a unifying stippling and framing.
