The range of sounds available to musicians has grown considerably during the 20th century. The invention of sound recording has made it possible to document any sonic event and to use it in a musical way. This text summarizes the history of this development and tries to show how the use of nonmusical sounds can be explained as the next stage in the history of western classical and how we can compare it with so called emancipation of dissonance at the end of the 20th century. It also analyzes various esthetic trends concerning the use of non-musical sounds and the ways in which the broadening of sonic possibilities influenced our understanding of what music is and how it functions as a way of human communication.
